Top five most dangerous cities to drive in.

Driving in the heavy traffic of LA poses different threats than driving in rural Wisconsin. Every year, reports come out on the worst cities to drive in. We took a look at the personal finance company, Wallethub, (https://wallethub.com/edu/best-worst-cities-to-drive-in/13964/#main-findings) who surveyed 100 of the most populated cities in the U.S. with 29 different metrics. Some of those metrics are average gas price, ownership costs, fatal accidents and theft. Blinking Brake Lights wanted to focus on the five states that were ranked the most dangerous to drive in. Ranking number five on the list is Birmingham, Alabama. According to the University of Alabama’s Center for Advanced Public Safety, a driver in Alabama has “greater than one-in-three chance over their lifetime to be involved in a fatal accident or that causes injury.” Three hundred and sixty five accidents are reported to law enforcement everyday and in 2018, 94, 242 crashes involving two vehicles occurred, and 302 fatalities were reported.

 

The fourth most dangerous city to drive in is Cleveland, Ohio. The Ohio State Highway Patrol Statistics reported in 2017, there were 1,094 fatal crashes. So far in 2018, there have been 815 fatal accidents.

 

Third on Wallethub’s list is Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2016, the New Mexico Department of Transportation reported that 313 people are involved in a crash daily that results in 56 people injured and one person killed. On average a collision occurs every 12 minutes. In 2016, 405 people were killed in car crashes.

 

The runner up for the most dangerous city in America is The Motor City, Detroit, Michigan. According to The Michigan State Police, 54,920 accidents occurred in Wayne County (Detroit) in 2017. One hundred and forty-five were fatal and 12,163 caused injuries.

 

And the absolute most dangerous city to drive a car in is St. Louis, Missouri. The Missouri Department of Transportation reported that St.Louis had 501 fatal car accidents in 2014, making up 21.33% of the State’s total crash fatalities. Texting or distracted drivers were responsible for 245 deaths.

 

Interestingly enough, the five cities with the highest accident likelihood were Philadelphia, PA, Los Angeles, CA, Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD and Boston, MA.
